Why Application Comes Before Valve Type

A valve is chosen to survive a specific medium, a specific duty cycle and a specific approval regime. Two valves can share a size, a pressure class and a face-to-face dimension and still be different products, because one is coated for potable water and the other built from a corrosion-resistant alloy for seawater. Application first keeps the medium, the actuation requirement and the documentation package in the same conversation as the price.

The Documentation Package Buyers Ask For

Across industries the paperwork converges on the same core set: a mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 traceable to the heat number, hydrostatic and seat test reports to API 598 or ISO 5208, and dimensional inspection records against the drawing. Sector additions include material certification for potable-water contact, non-destructive examination reports, third-party inspection release notes and, on oil and gas work, fire-test documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does valve selection start with the application rather than the valve type?

Because the medium, the duty cycle and the approval regime drive everything else. A DN300 valve on a potable water main, on a seawater reverse osmosis feed line and on a boiler feedwater line looks similar on a drawing but differs in body material, seat elastomer, coating and test documentation.

Which industries use the most industrial valves?

Water and wastewater treatment, desalination, power generation, oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical processing, mining and slurry handling, food and beverage, pulp and paper, HVAC and building services, and marine. Each has its own standard set and documentation expectations.

Do different industries require different test certificates?

The tests are broadly the same but the paperwork differs. Most projects ask for a mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 and hydrostatic and seat test reports to API 598 or ISO 5208. Water projects add material certification for potable water contact, and power and oil and gas projects often add third-party inspection.

Can one valve type serve several industries?

Yes. A rubber-seated butterfly valve is used in water treatment, cooling water circuits and desalination pretreatment. What changes between industries is the body material, the seat elastomer, the coating and the documentation package, not the basic design.
